The BLACK MANTIS is our unique logo and branding within the MANTIS KUNG FU ACADEMY.
The academy should be referred to as
MANTIS KUNG FU ACADEMY – HOME OF THE BLACK MANTIS
The grading patch is where the BLACK MANTIS LOGO is displayed with pride by the MKFA practitioner. The outside colour of the patch symbolises the progression and level attained within the MKFA system. As you continue learning and developing through the grading system, the coloured patches are replaced with coloured sashes starting from Blue level through to Master level.
Students are monitored to ensure they are achieving their goals and maintaining a high quality of the fundamentals, ensuring they understand and can display the techniques correctly and uphold the standard of MANTIS KUNG FU training throughout the MANTIS KUNG FU ACADEMY grading system.

WEAPONS & EQUIPMENT
At MANTIS KUNG FU ACADEMY – HOME OF THE BLACK MANTIS, traditional martial art weaponry plays a major role in combining the vital elements throughout the grading system. Weapons are trained for various reasons not only giving you the opportunity to further your knowledge in the art of MANTIS KUNG FU but as well as enhancing joint flexibility, hanging of the shoulder (Dil Sok), lightness of the feet, correct posture, whipping and catching of the hand, gripping of the ma (stance), dealing with weight/balance ratios and to better understand body movements.
When training various weaponry and forms, you can then obtain the understanding required to generate energy to the focus point of the weapon in hand. Connecting your body and mind is a key element to your Kun-Soot-Jing-Hou. Training without weapons is not recommended at MANTIS KUNG FU ACADEMY, as the hand will never be able to produce and use the pure energy/Ging (shock power) output that SOUTHERN PRAYING MANTIS KUNG FU is renowned for.
Our weapons are; White Willow Staff, Tridents, Walking Stick, Short Stick, Butterfly Knives, Tai Chi Fan, Tai Chi Sword and Broad Sword, all having individual forms that produce different energies, direction of movement and striking techniques. Some of our weapons have numerous forms as well as weapon on weapon fighting. Trained applications for disabling an opponent with a weapon is learnt at MANTIS KUNG FU ACADEMY with the hand techniques and skills that you have developed throughout the grading system.
All weapon training is done with strict supervision by Sifu or his senior instructors in a safe training environment.
The White Willow Staff is a long range weapon used on its own or against other weapons. The length of the staff gives great advantages in combat by keeping your opponent at bay. It improves grip and stance as well as developing blocking, thrusting, jumping and spinning techniques.
The Tridents, or Sai’s, are commonly used in pairs, with one in each hand. The utility of the trident as a weapon is reflected in its distinctive shape. The style includes a variety of blocks, parries, strikes, and captures against attackers from all directions and height levels. Use of the point, knuckle and central bar is emphasised, as well as rapid grip changes for multiple strikes and blocks.
The walking stick is trained as a singular form and in combat against other weapons to create the catching, snatching, poking, hooking and whipping energies. A very versatile weapon that is easily transferred into common objects such as the cane and umbrella.
Iron Shirt Medicine
Iron Shirt medicine (Dit Da Jow) is a bruising balm and conditioning lotion that is applied before, during or after a training session personally made by Sifu Matthew Hansen, providing great health benefits.
Focus pads are used regularly for training heavy contact techniques with speed and power, hand eye coordination teaching drills for rhythm, timing and combinations. A key point is knowing and training how to hold the pads when receiving strikes.
Punching bags can be used for fitness workouts, conditioning, body striking and simulation or solo combinations.
The Broadsword (Dao) is a powerful conditioning tool and a versatile weapon with self defence techniques transferable to similarly sized objects more commonly found in the modern world. Spinning, kicking, slicing, chopping and whipping energies are developed.
Tai Chi Sword and Fan
The softer and gentle forms are displayed with these weapons. The intent and execution of using them should not be taken lightly and are very dangerous and potentially deadly in the hands of a trained practitioner. All elements and energies from other weapons are utilised in these forms and combat scenarios.
