Sifu/SiGung Matthew Hansen
I have been living on the Gold Coast since 1978 and started my Kung Fu journey in 1989. I have a very supportive family who have all trained in the art of Southern Praying Mantis.
I am currently a 4th degree Gold Belt Master of Chow Gar Tonglong Kung Fu (1989-present). A Chef by trade, In 2002 I devoted my life to the art of Chow Gar Tonglong Kung Fu with intentions of growing my empire to become the biggest martial arts academy throughout the Gold Coast, currently operating and managing 4 academies located at Burleigh Heads, Pimpama, Carrara and Nashville, USA.
In 2013 I developed the learn kung fu online system, which has the most comprehensive library of Tonglong lessons in the world offering Skype lessons to consolidate your training.

Seminars, corporate events and school mentoring is a major part of the Mantis Kung Academy success within the Gold Coast community where many hours have been donated to charity organisations.
The rewarding part of my personal Kung Fu journey has been transforming the way I deal with situations, instead of the confrontational and constant fighting on the streets that I was accustomed to as a young man, I have now become more patient, creating more positive outcomes and a better way of life.
Kung Fu has not only helped me become a better person, but now I can pass this knowledge on to my students and people of all walks of life within the community. It is very exciting and gives me great personal satisfaction helping and watching other people achieve their goals through Kung Fu, as individuals vary in many different ways. Always stay true to yourself.
I have been awarded Queensland’s Apprentice Chef of the Year and awarded the title of Master Chef. Working within many five star hotels on the coast, I was a national finalist and showcased at the Australian Food Promotion in Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur, representing the Gold Coast Pan Pacific Hotel. In 1986 and 1992, I assisted with the grand openings of the Gold Coast International Hotel, Conrad Jupiters Casino, Surfers Paradise Travelodge and Legends Hotel.
My involvement with sport and fitness is intensive with 11 years of rugby league and 10 grand final wins. I have a Master Trainer qualification in fitness through the Australian Institute of Fitness. Along with my Kung Fu, these qualifications have allowed me to become heavily involved in the training of corporate companies through team building events. My work has enabled me to be involved in the Gold Coast City Councils – Healthy Active program, Surfing Australia- Billabong Surf Team, Gold Coast Titans NRL Rugby League Team and various elite swimmers. The programs delivered have been developed to increase productivity and enhance an individuals own abilities and to aid them to acquire the required mindset needed to excel within chosen professions.
Similarly, my passion has also provided me with the opportunity to work in many of the Gold Coast’s most exclusive health retreats such as Camp Eden, Casuarina Rec Club and Salt and Peppers Resort. I have also worked with the elderly in retirement villages helping with stress management, breathing, Tai Chi and general positive reinforcement.
I developed and ran a M.A.N.T.I.S. RESILIENCE PROGRAM at Varsity College Prep, Junior and Middle Schools, Miami Primary School, Elanora High School and Robina High School. This program has attracted government funding and is currently being funded by the Queensland Department of Housing – South Coast Community Renewal and has been evaluated by Griffith University.

Chinese Kung Fu Academy (CKFA) Training History
I first commenced training in 1990 at “The Mark” in Surfers Paradise under Grand Master Henry Sue, moving to Taree Street in Burleigh Heads and then finally moving into CKFA headquarters at Ashmore.
After eight and a half years of regular training, it was in December of 1998 that I received my 1st Degree Red Belt and became the first Red Belt master, along with my brother, of Tonglong on the Gold Coast, only then was I able to establish a Kung Fu school of my own under CKFA. I went to Palm Beach at Noonan’s Holistic Health Centre and due to the constant increase in student numbers, I quickly outgrew this facility and relocated the school to our current location in Burleigh heads.
Below is my grading and involvement history with C.K.F.A.
White belt August 1990
Yellow belt October 1990
Orange belt December 1990
Green belt level 1 June 1991
Green belt level 2 October 1991
Blue belt level 1 November 1992
Blue belt level 2 November 1993
Purple belt level 1 October 1994
Purple belt level 2 September 1995
Brown belt level 1 September 1996
Brown belt level 2 November 1997
Red belt 1st degree December 1998
Red belt 2nd degree June 2002
Red belt 3rd degree November 2003
1991 – Commenced as assistant instructor at the Ashmore headquarters on the Gold Coast.
1992 – 1998 helped run Ashmore School as one of the senior instructors organising GOLD COAST LION DANCES, demonstrations, fund-raising, bbq’s and special events.
1999 – Established own school at Burleigh Heads.
2002 – Travelled to China and performed at the Shaolin Temple for the Abbott.
During the 21 years at CKFA, I was trained personally by Grand Master Henry Sue. During this time I gained more knowledge and kung fu skill than I could have ever hoped for.
The CKFA has taught me the skills, knowledge and power that I now produce and subsequently reproduce through my teaching. The TONGLONG art is like nothing I have experienced before and I thank the CKFA for the knowledge given to me. My dedication to Master H.Sue and the understanding he has shown me within the art has allowed me to move on without hesitation, only reflections of the time and energy given and hours spent training in the art.
At the end of 2009 I realised that I had become stagnant in my position within the Chinese Kung Fu Academy – CKFA and it was time for a change. I became aware that I needed to grow in a more positive and proactive way for my family, the growth of my academy, and as a person.
Since then I have continued and will continue, to be dedicated to learning Kung Fu, providing guidance to my students and improving myself.
